    New to the channel here so I'm sorry if you did cover this in a video. I'm from southeastern PA and we get pretty cold winters and hot summers. Do you do anything special to keep your outdoor bins cool or warm, depending on the weather?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 20 годин тому

      Thanks so much for stopping by the channel! I really don't do anything for the cold since we rarely get below freezing here in the Tampa, FL area. But I have several commenters who say that their red wigglers have survived through the winter! My guess is they kept the bins near their house or in a green house. Filled them with lots of bedding and some even have bins that are open to the ground so the worms can flee if needed. A worm's cocoons can take colder temps than the worms themselves. I definitely have experience with heat!! I used to put frozen water bottles and ice cubes in my Outdoor Worm Bin (which is the bin you saw in this video) but I didn't last year and they did fine! Now, if I accidentally cause heat by piling up too much food in the center then I will add some ice cubes. I can do this because the bin drains and I don't need to worry about it affecting the moisture. I also keep it in the shade and directly on the ground which helps to moderate the temperatures. My Urban Worm Bin is a different story...It is on the southwest side of my house so it gets the most heat. It also is up in the air so the temperatures vary more widely...so I do use frozen water bottles to keep the temperatures down in the summer. I hope this helps!! I also have 2 indoor bins and they are way easier to deal with when it comes to temperatures!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    The egg shells may be being broken down by acid as well. Calcium carbonate dissolves in moderately acidic conditions. It's a great ph buffer and if you overdose it, it's just more grit for the worms. I use chalk

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 2 дні тому

      I had not thought about that! That would be fascinating if that was what was helping the worms with all the grit...because it just does not seem like they could possibly be going through it so fast!! What kind of chalk do you use? Like from a chalk board or the kind gymnasts use or is there some way to buy it in a different form? Do you think they use it as grit as well? I get lots of questions about different things to use for grit besides egg shells. Thanks for passing on the info & thanks so much for stopping by to watch Christian!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi, what do you do about pot worms in your worm castings?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 2 дні тому

      Generally nothing since they are present in small quantities in almost all worm bins. But if their populations get so big that I can see them right away it usually means I am overfeeding. So what I do in that case is skip a feeding and add more dry bedding to try to lessen the conditions that caused their population to bloom. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thank you! I harvested some castings recently and noticed them still in there after drying the worm bin a little and adding dry bedding. I wasn’t sure if they eventually go away on their own in the harvested castings. I was planning to use the castings in my grow bags and raised beds. I didn’t want to then introduce them to there if it would make them multiply.

    Hey there. Amazing video as always. I was wondering, how long have you been running this worm bin to get all the healthy microbes and what not to help with breaking foods down?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 3 дні тому

      Thank you for the kind words!! I started this VermiHut 3 & a half years ago. The bottom tray on the system makes 19 trays that have run through it (it came with 5, I use one as a sifter and always have 4 on it, but recycle the trays back on to the system each time one is harvested). I think the age of the system and the build up of a good microbiome is what makes it run so well! No way I could feed this much right from the start, but it wasn't too long after that we got used to each other and it was off to the races! In my experience a 6 month old worm bin has been through enough cycles to have a fantastic microbiome but it continues to get better with age! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 3 дні тому

      That's a great question Laura! I have a spread sheet I created with several auto functions that update the number of days since last feeding, age of bin, age of each tray, number of feedings since last harvest etc. All I have to do is put the date I fed and it does all the rest. I also add little notes about the bins and rewatch the previous video to prepare for the next feeding & video. It makes it really easy to do when you take pictures and video of each feeding...If I forget to input the date I fed, I just look back at the date of the video, input it in my spreed sheet and it calculates all the other info! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Your smelling of the stinky carrot happened out of view of the camera... so I'm not sure if you took a direct whiff, or if you used the safer method they teach in chemistry class - which is to waft the odor in the direction of your nose rather than taking a direct sniff. I usually try to use the latter approach to avoid getting overwhelmed :) Looking forward to seeing how the wormies do with those yummy foods left for them out on the top surface!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 3 дні тому

      Sorry about that!! It is pretty confusing, but I think these two videos might clear it up: ua-cam.com/video/XNG4i8iXc_g/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/_uRRpwZcMXM/v-deo.html Basically I add trays to the bottom with dry shredded cardboard and as they get moist, they work their way up to the top to be fed and then cure right below the top feeding tray before I harvest them. It's a bit of an odd way to rotate but it is super effective and the most efficient way I have found to run a worm tower! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    @danherring5676 5 днів тому

    So, the stuff in the store is sold dry weight. Did you re-weigh that after drying, and what was the dry yield? I really like that worm bag idea because it looks SO much easier to harvest than my worm tower.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 5 днів тому

      I did not re weigh it more dry...I sent all 19lbs home with my mom!! I could have probably pulled 30 pounds of worm castings out if I decided to dig up some more! This bin is my easiest bin to harvest. I actually just leave the castings in that mortar tray under the bin for a few days to let them dry a little before I throw them in my storage containers...or give them away. If you are thinking about getting one, and you have the space for it, you will definitely fall in love with it!! I didn't harvest until 6 months for my first harvest so I could fill it up, but now I have the ability to take out 20lbs a month at least if I want to. Thanks so much for watching Dan!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hey there Patrick, I hope all is well with you. I started a tiny bin last week and put 135 reds in it and fed it 6 cut up banana peels. Today I did my first check and fluff of it and found 3 pieces of the banana. after fluffing it up I put a feeding zone in and added dry cardboard/ paper and put in 1 cherry,1 zucchini, the left-over banana along with 2 small pieces of watermelon. do you think that might be too much food? I do not want to fail! I hope that I did the right size feeding even though there was some left over. I think everything that I put in was fast food except the banana from last week. All that went in today was frozen. Thanks for allowing me to ask all these questions. Very new worm composter.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 5 днів тому

      Hi Dan! I do think that is too much food for 135 worms. I would go with one small watermelon piece, one of the left over banana peel pieces and just a small piece of the zucchini, maybe even leave the zucchini out. You can put the other stuff in the freezer and use it for the next feedings. Check out these two videos to see how much I feed 1,000 worms when I start out and what it looks like 6 days later: ua-cam.com/video/1IRP-Nu6_90/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/UsH3k92KhYg/v-deo.html I would also make the bedding that you use with each feeding slightly damp for the first month or two until the bin can maintain it's own moisture better. You'll be able to ramp up your feedings in about a month when you get used to how much they eat...they won't starve since they also eat the bedding. I hope this helps!! Feel free to ask any question on any of my videos anytime!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Do the frozen apples work better because they are frozen or because they are apples? If I freeze everything will it be eaten faster? My worms are slow 😂 I’m sure I’m doing g something wrong. Any advice from anyone? Executive Producer?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 6 днів тому

      Frozen is the way to go!! Water expands when it freezes so it helps to break the cell walls within the plant based food scraps. This helps to physically break down the food so the worms and microbes can eat it quicker. Apples are actually one of the slower foods, where as lettuce stalks are a super fast food! I'm sure your worms are not slow 😂🤣😂 I would just feed them a little less amount or a little less often until you see them eat almost everything you give them. What we don't want is to overfeed which can lead to fermentation and/or ammonia which is a worm bin killer! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I heard you mention mites is that bad?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 6 днів тому

      The kind of mites that are in worm bins are not bad at all!! They only feed on dead or decaying mater so they help the worm shred or tear up the food and bedding. I big mite bloom in population when you previously only had a few could mean a worm bin that is being overfeed or running slightly more acidic...which is usually caused by overfeeding. Once the castings go in the garden, any mites that might be left will seek out other dead organic material or will most likely die, but will not harm your plants. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      🤣 Unexpected Ann inspired muddy thumbs up!! The moisture was falling down that drawstring so when I grabbed the string, it slimed me!! First time, since usually it's pretty dry below. As for the worms, it was only a few and I think the worms traveled up as the heat was generated and got stuck in the layers of paper towels. I'm sure most fled to the other side and down below, it was just the amount of heat and how quick that surprised me! We have three boys (no girls) with one married off to our first daughter in law, our middle one here about to married in a year and the last in college. It was an adjustment getting used to girls when they all started dating😂🤣😂 Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hey Patrick, congrats to your son. Do you think it might be more useful to measure the harvest by volume instead of weight? The weight will vary wildly depending on moisture level. Maybe liters or pints/gallons would be better. Just a thought. Cheers!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 7 днів тому

      Thank you!! That is a very interesting point! You are right, worm casting weight is very dependent on moisture content so volume would be a good additional, if not primary, unit of measure. I'm sure fine castings have greater ability to fill a volume container than bigger chunk castings, like putting rice into a jar versus marbles, so I guess it's not perfect either but I agree it is probably better than weight! I store my casting in old kitty litter containers which I think are about 3-4 gallons so maybe I can start trying to measure in gallons as well. Thanks for the very insightful question!! I'll try to remember to measure in gallons next harvest!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I keep a mortar tray under my Urban Worm Bag, and the castings drip into it constantly, and they are always filled with worms. I took off the cover because worms were always trapped in the velcro. Lost too many that way.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 7 днів тому

      Oh wow! I usually don't have anything dripping down, but I started spraying down the contents and using damp bedding recently because the castings felt crunchy in the little bottom bladder part. It worked, now the castings towards the bottom are wet! I haven't had any castings fall out yet. I stopped using the cover as well pretty early on because I wanted to see if anything was coming out of the bottom, luckily I never ran into issues of worms falling out then crawling back up to the Velcro! I wonder if you switched to dry bedding if that would help? Thanks for passing on the issues you've been dealing with in your UWB & of course thanks so much for watching Marco!!🪱🪱🪱

    Another great looking feeding Patrick. Typically the root vegetables do take a bit longer to breakdown for the worms. I need to stay active of adding more bedding to the feedings.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 7 днів тому

      It is amazing to me how quick the volume goes down...without adding bedding this time, when I rotate it under and harvest in 60 days, the tray will probably only be 2/3rds full! All root veggies tend to take longer as well for me except for the occasional carrot piece...but then again sometime carrots take forever for me too!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch Rick!!🪱🪱🪱

    I got an urban worm bag about 5 weeks ago. I went in to feed today and only found about 5 worms, I started with 1000 red wigglers. I was feeding once a week, maybe I overfed them? I’ve had a vermihut for 9 months and haven’t had any issues. Is there a way to know what I did wrong? My other question is can I just add new worms to the bag when they arrive? I ordered more red wigglers

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost 8 днів тому

      Without knowing anything about it, I would say you are probably right about over feeding. I would say if you had it inside and the temperature was not too warm then something in the food scraps probably spoiled or converted to ammonia which will kill worms quick. Did it have foul odors? I would say the best thing to do is restart with damp bedding and a few hand fulls of the VermiHut's contents to inoculate the UWB. Feed very sparingly, maybe every 10 days at first until you know they are eating the food. I feed mine on average every two weeks. And yes, after you empty the contents of the UWB (we don't know what killed the worms so best to get rid of it) and restart it, you can put the worms right in! I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
